Recover the Right ?Whey? ? Tone Professional Fitness

Many people ask me about the best recovery drink to chug down post-workout. ?Despite the cool ads with famous athletes endorsing it, I am not a fan of chocolate milk ? as a recovery drink, or at all for that matter!

Chocolate milk is sugar water. ?Plain and simple. ?It contains more sugar than protein, and protein is what you and your muscles really need immediately after a workout. ?Whether you are drinking fat free, reduced fat, or whole chocolate milk, an 8-ounce serving has anywhere from 23 grams to 28 grams of sugar and only 8 grams of protein. ?Those are not good nutritional stats.

I recently wrote about the problems with consuming sugar, and drinking chocolate milk is just another example of a sugar-laden suboptimal food I would only recommend as a ?cheat.?

I have also read the labels of countless protein powders. ?Most protein powders have some combination of soy, artificial sweeteners, chemicals you can?t pronounce, and artificial colorings. ?Your body is not going to achieve optimal recovery (or optimal results) if you feed it these chemical cocktails.

So, what is left? ?I have only found a handful of products I would drink (and therefore, would recommend to you). ?My favorite is a brand called Vital Whey. ?It is a high-quality whey protein made from raw milk from grass-fed cows. ?No hormones or antibiotics are given to the cows, which means you get a clean, healthy whey product. I?ll save you from the details, but many whey proteins are NOT considered a clean or healthy source of protein.

If you love chocolate milk, the Cocoa flavored is awesome. ?I mix it with water right after I train, and it is a perfect recovery drink. ?There are no artificial chemicals or sweeteners, and it contains only 2 grams of sugar and 15 grams of protein per scoop (I actually use 2 scoops for additional protein).

I carry Vital Whey at the studio, so give it a try! ?I highly recommend it. ?And if you are out shopping for protein powder, make sure to read the ingredient list. ?I know I sound like a broken record about label reading, but it is the only way to know what you are putting in your body.

Always remember: quality in, quality out! ?Feed your body healthy food and beverages, and you will get the most optimal results.
