Researchers Create Glass Just 3 Atoms Thick

sciencehabit writes "Researchers have created the world's thinnest pane of glass. The glass, made of silicon and oxygen, formed accidentally when the scientists were making graphene, an atom-thick sheet of carbon, on copper-covered quartz. They believe an air leak caused the copper to react with the quartz, which is also made of silicon and oxygen, producing a glass layer with the graphene. The glass is a mere three atoms thick ? the minimum thickness of silica glass?which makes it two-dimensional. The team notes that the structure 'strikingly resembles' a diagram drawn by a glass theorist attempting to unravel its structure back in 1932. Such ultra-thin glass could be used in semiconductor or graphene transistors." See Nano Letters for an abstract (and another picture) to the paywalled article.

Apple iCloud

When I heard that iCloud?(free to $100 per year; $24.99 for iTunes Match), Apple's free data-syncing service, supported Windows machines, I was at first slack-jawed--and in a good way. Was it true? Could Mac users now access their Calendar, Contacts, iTunes music, photos, and other files from a PC? My open mouth tightened to a mere smile when I realized the answer was, "Well, sort of."

Apple's iCloud is a great service that does a number of things very well?namely, automatic back-ups of iOS devices?but shouldn't be confused with other file-syncing services along the lines of SugarSync (4.5 stars) and Dropbox (4 stars). Those two services, both PCMag Editors' Choice products, give you access to any files you mark to be synchronized from virtually any machine. For example, you can create and save a presentation on your office computer, sync it, and then access it from your home computer or mobile device by simply logging into the service. But what they don't do that iCloud does is synchronize your Apple apps, like Calendar, Contacts, and iTunes.

Apple's iCloud does synchronize some document files, but not any old thing you want. iCloud doesn't think about syncing documents per se. It thinks about syncing the data you have associated with an app. For example, iCloud can synchronize office files made with Apple productivity software iWork and let you access them anywhere an iWork app is installed. It also syncs images across your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even a Windows PC. iCloud makes music you buy through iTunes accessible to you from any iTunes player, and with the optional add-on service iTunes Match ($24.99 per year), it will sync and store up to 25,000 music files (no matter how you got them) that you have in your iTunes library. But iCloud doesn't synchronize many other files that you create or edit in other apps.

Once you understand what iCloud can and can't do, you'll likely find that it's a valuable and worthwhile service nevertheless, but that doesn't mean you don't also need another file-syncing service. All Apple device owners should sign up for iCloud as soon as humanly possible, but know that it won't meet all your file-syncing needs.

iCloud Sign Up and Requirements
To get iCloud, you need an Apple ID plus at least one of the following devices:

  • Mobile device running iOS5 (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPad 2, iPod touch 3rd or 4th generation; see How to Get Apple's iOS 5 for help)
  • Mac computer running OS X Lion 10.7.2
  • A Windows PC running Windows 7 or Vista SP2.

From a Mac running Lion, look under Preferences for the iCloud logo. Select it to dig into the options. On a Windows desktop or laptop, you'll want to surf over to apple.com/icloud/setup to download and install the local software. Additionally, there is a Web interface at iCloud.com where you can access some of your backed up information online, but it's not a very comprehensive system (more on that later).

For iPhones and iPads, look in Settings for the new iCloud icon that will appear after you update to iOS 5.

Tips for Backing Up Your iPhone and iPad
One part of iCloud that you should definitely take advantage of is automatic backup. From the iCloud page of the Settings panel, look toward the very bottom of the screen for the option Storage and Backup. Make sure "iCloud Backup" is switched on. Then, you'll want to poke around in the Manage Storage section, especially if you have a lot of apps, to further determine what should get backed up and what doesn't need to be. By turning off apps that are not important, you can save a lot of space. If saving space isn't your thing, you could just buy more space. Apple gives iCloud users 5GB to start, but you can buy up to 50GB more (making 55GB total) for $100 per year. iOS devices only back up over Wi-Fi so there's no worry about the service hogging data from your data plan.

A second feature to jump on upon installing iCloud is Find My iPhone or Find My iPad. Turn it on, and it can help you locate or remotely wipe a lost or stolen phone or tablet. There's also a Find My iPhone/iPad app, which you can use to locate lost devices, including Macs, provided you set up Find My Mac on your laptop or desktop.

In Mass. Senate race, GOP's Brown embracing Obama (AP)

BOSTON ? During the 2010 special election to fill the seat left vacant by the death of U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, then-candidate Scott Brown vowed to be the "41st" vote against President Barack Obama's sweeping health care overhaul.

Two years later, the Republican Massachusetts senator still opposes what he calls "Obamacare" but has found a lot more to love about the Democratic president and his agenda.

While many Republican lawmakers have used Obama as the ultimate campaign foil, Brown has touted his bipartisanship as a key asset in his re-election bid as he hopes to fend off a challenge from his chief Democratic rival Elizabeth Warren.

As proof, Brown has gone out of his way to highlight common ground with Obama.

When Obama called on Congress during his State of the Union speech to "send me a bill that bans insider trading by members of Congress, and I will sign it tomorrow," Brown, who sponsored the bill, was quick to highlight the endorsement.

As Obama was exiting the House chamber after the speech, Brown buttonholed him on the issue.

"My insider trading bill is on Harry's (Majority Leader Harry Reid's) desk right now," Brown told Obama, shaking his hand. "Tell him to get it out."

"I'm going to tell him," Obama replied. "I'm going to tell him to get it done."

The brief exchange played out before television cameras, and a press release issued by Brown's Senate office included a link to the clip of the video posted on YouTube by Brown's campaign.

Brown has also been a key swing vote in the Senate. He supported a Democrat-backed overhaul of the nation's financial system, and his vote to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" ban on gays serving openly also drew criticism.

Brown broke even further from his fellow Senate Republicans in backing Obama's decision to bypass the Senate in January and appoint Richard Cordray to lead the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The Senate's top Republican, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, accused Obama of an unprecedented power grab that "arrogantly circumvented the American people."

But Brown, who had welcomed tea party support during his special election campaign, issued a statement lauding the appointment.

"If we're going to make progress as a nation, both parties in Washington need to work together to end the procedural gridlock and hyper-partisanship," he said.

Part of Brown's embrace of Obama has to do with the Massachusetts electorate, which is more used to electing Democrats to office than Republicans.

Not only is Brown is the only GOP member of the state's congressional delegation, but Democrats hold every other statewide seat in Massachusetts; Gov. Deval Patrick is a close ally of Obama.

Another likely reason why Brown is highlighting his policy ties to Obama is the presence of Warren in the race.

The Harvard professor and consumer advocate has captured the imagination of Democrats in Massachusetts and nationwide. She's also proved adept at pulling in millions in campaign donations.

Warren raised $5.7 million during the final three months of 2011, eclipsing Brown's $3.2 million for the same period. Brown still enjoys an overall money advantage with $12.8 million in cash on hand, compared to the more than $6 million Warren has in her account.

Recent polls show the two locked in a close race.

The more Brown can show his bipartisan streak, the more he may be able to blunt a Warren surge ? particularly in an election year when Obama's name will be on the ballot, another big draw for voters in a state where the Democratic president remains popular.

Warren's campaign has worked to tie Brown to the GOP, saying he's backed tax breaks for oil companies and has spoken out against a proposal by Obama to require people making more than $1 million a year to pay at least 30 percent in taxes.

"Scott Brown's endorsed Mitt Romney, not President Obama, and on important issues ? the Buffet rule, jobs bills, and tax breaks for oil companies ? Scott Brown has turned his back on Massachusetts and on President Obama to stand with and vote for the interests of Wall Street, big banks and big oil," said Warren press secretary Alethea Harney.

Brown has said he's just showing what he says is his independent streak by looking each issue individually and deciding what he thinks is best for Massachusetts and the country, regardless of party affiliation.

That emphasis on Brown's "independent voice" could be critical in November.

While Massachusetts tends to elect Democrats, the majority of voters in the state are not registered with either party.

It was by appealing to those independent voters, and picking off moderate Democrats, that Brown was able to win in 2010. While that campaign was compressed into a few weeks ? allowing Brown to ride a wave of popularity ? the current campaign will play out between now and November.

There are limits to Brown's bipartisanship.

During a campaign kick-off rally in Worcester, Mass., Brown ? speaking to a more partisan crowd ? only invoked Obama's name when he called for the repeal of what he called "Obamacare."

"One unfinished fight is the effort to get rid of Obamacare. A government takeover of health care was a bad enough idea to start with, and the way it was rammed through was even worse," he told the cheering crowd. "I was against Obamacare then, and I am for its repeal today."

Massachusetts Democrats have struggled to find a way of targeting Brown as he highlights areas of agreement with the president.

As Brown spotlighted Obama's support of his anti-insider trading bill, Democrats said Brown should go a step further and back another Obama proposal to limit any elected officials from owning stocks in industries affected by their votes.

"Scott Brown should join President Obama and Senate Democrats' call to ban members of Congress from owning stock in companies they influence if he is really serious about cleaning up Washington," said Massachusetts Democratic Party spokesman Kevin Franck.

The Senate campaign could end up being the most expensive in Massachusetts history.

Last month, Brown and Warren took the unusual step of signing a pledge to curb political attack ads by outside groups in their Massachusetts Senate race. Under the terms of the deal, each campaign would agree to donate half the cost of any third-party ad to charity if that ad either supports their candidacy or attacks their opponent by name.

Take-out is much quicker and easier than standing in the kitchen trying to cook vegetables and healthy foods. But the choices you make about the food you eat can really affect your health.Yet you don?t have to completely give up all the food you love. Each day if you add a few fruits, grains, nuts and vegetables into your diet these will help your body get the vital fiber, minerals, vitamins and nutrients that it needs. You will find it a lot easier to maintain a healthy weight as adding these things into your diet will reduce your overall calorie intake.

Doing more physical activities everyday day does not mean that you must become a gym addict. There are loads of reasons why you should at least think about getting outside more often. Your happiness, bones and eyes are all affected in a good way by the sun which is also a great source of vitamin D. People who suffer through depression or anxiety can feel much happier just getting outside for a little while. Think about all the physical activities you can enjoy when you are outside. People that meditate for just a few minutes on a regular daily basis can see dramatic health improvements. The anxiety that you are feeling every day will feel less potent after meditating. Stress, though not a virus or bacteria, can lead to detrimental health issues like depression, high blood pressure, and an assortment of other ailments. To meditate wherever you may be, sit in a comfortable position in a quiet location. While focusing on your breathing, let your mind drift to a faraway location. As you do this, your mind will start to work through the myriad of things you?re expected to cope with every day until it eventually begins to feel much calmer. The best thing of all is that by meditating, the physical symptoms that you once had will start to diminish.

To get the most out of your existence, you should be taking pleasure and living a contented life. Review: 'Kill List' a bold mix of genres (AP)

"Kill List" morphs subtly but devastatingly from an uncomfortable domestic drama to a brutally violent hit-man thriller to a what-the-hell-just-happened? exploration of a primal, paranoid nightmare.

Or is what we're seeing real?

Director and co-writer Ben Wheatley slyly gives nothing away, but rather has enough faith in his challenging material and in his audience to let us debate the meaning of the ending and fill in the blanks for ourselves. And his skillful cast of actors, who improvised much of the dialogue, absolutely sell it with an abiding naturalism, even as the film turns disturbing and outlandishly dark.

"Kill List" begins as a slice of life within a modern British family, but from the start, Wheatley creates a sense of unease through camerawork that feels a little too intimate and jump cuts between disconnected moments.

Jay (Neil Maskell) is an ex-soldier and unemployed assassin who's still reeling eight months after a job that went wrong in Kiev. While this may sound glamorous in a shadowy way, Jay and his wife, Shel (the beautiful MyAnna Buring), argue about all the same things normal married couples argue about ? finances, health insurance, forgetting items at the grocery store, etc.

By grounding the film in such a prosaic, relatable way early on as Wheatley and co-writer Amy Jump do, it only makes the transition toward the extreme climax seem like even more of an impressive feat. You may look back at the end and wonder, how did we get here? Pay attention: There are small clues along the way.

Jay and Shel have a sensitive, 7-year-old son named Sam (Harry Simpson) who is learning to endure his parents' frequently fierce, volatile fights ? one of which seems to come out of nowhere as they're hosting another couple for dinner. They are the dryly funny Gal (Michael Smiley, who has a fascinating ease in front of the camera) and his new girlfriend Fiona (Emma Fryer). Gal is Jay's partner, and has come with a new assignment that will get him back in business.

It's actually a series of hits, which they pull off without a hitch, but which also reveal Jay's tendency to go overboard. He's got a vengeful, sadistic streak in him, and "Kill List" will make you flinch more than once; it may also make you feel queasy the next time you see a hammer. Wheatley tempers these bloody bursts with low-key, darkly humorous discussions between the two longtime friends during their travels. Jay is tightly wound; Gal tends to roll with it. Of all the genres mashed together here, mismatched-buddy comedy may be the most unexpected.

But Jay himself seems to realize he's going over the edge, and tries to back out of his duties. This only drags him into a more dangerous world than he ever could have imagined. Just saying the names of the movies this culmination calls to mind would serve as a spoiler, so we'll let you discover the bizarro world Wheatley depicts for yourself.

You may not know exactly what you've seen, and sure, you could argue that there are some plot holes, and the literal vs. metaphorical interpretations are myriad. But the final moments of "Kill List" are bold and heart-pounding, and they're likely to shake you up and change your mood long afterward.

"Kill List," an IFC Midnight release, is not rated but contains graphic violence, disturbing images, nudity, language and smoking. Running time: 95 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.
