Rick Santorum Denies Taking Photo of Lindsay Lohan

Does Rick Santorum have a crush on Lindsay Lohan?

The former presidential candidate reportedly asked the actress to pose for a photo at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, then awkwardly denied it.

Lohan was sitting with Greta Van Susteren, whose invitation to the star drew fire from Meghan McCain, at the annual event when Santorum approached.

He reportedly asked Lindsay to take a picture of him with Van Susteren, then snapped a photo of Lohan. Not along with him, just a photo of Lohan. Alone.

Random? Sure. But probably harmless. The funny part is that when asked about this by a reporter shortly after, he dodged the question unnecessarily.

"I took a picture of a lot of people tonight," the visibly uncomfortable politician said, as though he could not remember what happened minutes earlier.

It's really okay Rick. You're allowed to be a little enamored with this sultry, captivating, slow-moving train wreck of an individual. We clearly are.

Santorum dropped out of the Republican presidential race this month, having given Mitt Romney an impressively strong run considering that he's Rick Santorum.

Digital Storm locks and loads Ivy Bridge into its new recruits

Digital Storm locks and loads Ivy Bridge into its new recruits

Digital Storm has announced that its premium-priced (and not so premium-priced) gaming PCs will soon be touting Ivy Bridge processors. This means, going forward, all machines will come with the Intel's third generation Core architecture, with the PC maker already claiming it's managed overclocks at 4.8GHz. Like its machines, Digital Storm is keeping cool on when the systems will find their way from workshop to LAN, or what effect (if any) there'll be on pricing. Keep the cross hairs focused on the source link for more info.

Katie Price: Engaged to Leandro Penna!

Leandro Penna is set to marry Katie Price.

The voluptuous UK model, who only recently got divorced from Alex Reid, after getting divorced by Peter Andre not long before that, showed off her huge, sparkly, pink, heart-shaped diamond engagement ring this week.

Last night, she tweeted: "Wooo hooo so excited." Woo.

Katie Price, Leandro Penna

Katie's spokesman confirmed the engagement, telling The Sun: "It's true, they are engaged. Leandro proposed to Katie while they were away skiing recently and she said yes. They told her children but intended to keep it secret for a while."

"They are both very happy. No wedding arrangements have been made and they are both relaxed about that for the time being."

Katie Price and Leandro Penna, a model from Argentina, first met at Elton John's Oscars party last year. The mother of three has certainly been through a roller coaster in the romance department. Let's hope the third time's the charm?

How to Make Your Own Beats By Dre Headphones (Except They'll Actually Sound Good) [Video]

So Beats By Dre headphones sound kind of terrible. Minus "kind of." But they sure are pretty. Film maker and Renaissance man Casey Neistat took it upon himself to turn an actually decent set of cans into beautiful black and red doppelgangers. And he made a how to video. More »

Panasonic teams up with NHK on 145-inch 8K Super Hi-Vision plasma TV

Image

We thought the 8K 85-inch Super Hi-Vision LCD we saw during CES was impressive, but Japanese broadcaster NHK is already looking to surpass that by going even bigger. To that end it worked with Panasonic (above: that's Panasonic's Keishi Kubota on the left, Yoshio Ito of NHK on the right) to create this 145-inch prototype plasma, unveiled today as an example of the kind of displays we can expect to see once broadcasts jump to the higher resolution some day. The world's first self-illuminating Super Hi-Vision TV, it features every pixel of its expected 8K resolution -- 7,680 x 4,320. After working for months on smaller (only 85- or 103-inch) 4K plasmas, the two companies had to come up with an entirely new drive method for the display that works by scanning the pixels vertically to achieve a uniform picture quality. The NHK plans to show off the new display at its open house in May, although we're a bit more interested to see if we can watch the Olympics on it this summer. Check the gallery below for a few more pictures from DigInfo.TV's Ryo Osuga, or hit the more coverage link for a breakdown of the difficulties encountered in building a high resolution display that's this massive.

Sharp posts $1.4 billion extraordinary loss, refocuses on mobile displays

Sharp posts $1.4 billion extraordinary loss for 2011 - 2012, sees writing on wall in high definitionSharp has reported an extraordinary loss of 117.1 billion yen ($1.4 billion) for the financial year ending March 2012. The company has cited restructuring costs and inventory losses as the causes for the write-down, but also projected that its TV business would lose a further 18.7 percent of its projected sales in the current year. The company has decided to convert some of its big-screen LCD production lines into mobile LCDs as it tries to reassert its dwindling display business. It's yet more bad news after the company sold part of its LCD manufacturing business to Hon Hai, Sony withdrew from a joint venture and refused to deal with Sharp in the future, plus an 86 percent collapse in profits.

TSMC 2012 Q1 results: profits down again as 20-nanometer process proves expensive

Image

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has offered up its first quarter results for the year, revealing yet another middling quarter. While turnover was NT$105.51 billion ($3.6 billion) and net profit was NT$33.47 billion ($1.1 billion), that's still 7.7 percent down on the NT$36.28 it made in the same quarter last year. On the upside, the chip foundry, which produces silicon for plenty of the world's biggest electronics companies, managed to claw back some of those profit dips from Q4 of last year, suggesting milder climes may lie ahead.

The company is also encouraged by strong demand for its new 28-nanometer chips, which should offset the $8.5 billion spent on developing them, alongside a forthcoming 20-nanometer facility. 28-nanometer hardware still only equates to 5 percent of overall revenue, which should grow as companies use up their older inventory. If you've got a currency convertor to hand, head on past the break for the detailed breakdown.

US lessons in Afghanistan can aid Colombian troops

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta got a glimpse into how America's military's experience in Afghanistan is contributing to the U.S. counterinsurgency training in Colombia.

While the two conflicts are no perfect match, U.S. military and defense officials said they can learn from the Colombian's long and bloody campaign against the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as the FARC. Likewise, Colombia can learn from U.S. experiences battling the Taliban's roadside bomb threat, which has been the No. 1 killer in Afghanistan.

Under a blistering sun, Panetta and his staff flew Monday to the Talemaida Army Base in the mountains outside Bogota, where U.S. trainers help instruct members of the Colombian special forces.

Panetta also announced during his visit to the base that the U.S. would facilitate the sale of 10 helicopters to Bogota ? five Army Black Hawks and five commercial aircraft ? to help Colombian forces in their fight against the FARC.

Out at the training grounds, a U.S. military officer participating in the program said U.S. special operators are sharing their 10 years of battlefield counterinsurgency experience. The Colombians, he said, can use many of the same techniques, particularly how to share intelligence, sustain and support troops on a long-term basis, and identify and counter improvised explosive devises.

The officer, who has served three tours in Afghanistan but spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said the guerilla, hit-and-run tactics of the FARC, who number about 8,000, are very similar to what the Taliban is doing now.

The FARC took up arms in 1964, and is the biggest of many outlaw groups that abduct people for financial, political and other ends.

As Panetta watched, six commandos descended from the sky, their blue and yellow parachutes billowing above them. The special operations forces demonstrated a raid on a building at mid-field, acting out the rescue of a hostage. Teams also slid down braided ropes from helicopters, gathered up someone acting as an injured person and pulled the stretcher back up. The helicopter flew away with the commandos dangling from the ropes.

Talemaida is the largest Colombian military base, and there is currently a brigade of special operations forces ? or about 1,500 commandos ? being trained there. The U.S. has about 180 U.S. military in the country, including trainers.

U.S. aid to Colombia's police and military has dropped over the past several years, from about $440 million in 2009 to $270 million in 2012, according to Adam Isacson, an analyst with the Washington Office on Latin America, which compiles such figures.

The country's difficult battle with the FARC has dragged on for nearly five decades, but officials now tout it as a success story.

And they suggest one parallel the U.S. can draw between this fight and the war in Afghanistan may be the value of patience in a counterinsurgency battle.

At a very broad level, said defense analyst Michael O'Hanlon, the Colombia fight shows that "not everything is a clean win and clean defeat."

Americans have become increasingly impatient with the deadly Afghan conflict that has dragged on for more than a decade. And there has been a growing drumbeat from both the public and Congress for the U.S. to get out of the war sooner than the administration's strategy, which calls for the exit of combat troops by the end of 2014.

The key to success is the ability of the U.S. and NATO to train the Afghan forces so that they can take over security of their own country.

O'Hanlon, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based think tank, said Iraq's relatively rapid turnaround in 2007, after the surge of U.S. forces helped beat back the insurgency, "may have created some unfortunate impressions that are unrealistic to extend to other cases. Just because we're not attaining our preferred goals doesn't mean that we're wasting our time or that we're being defeated," he said.

As is the hope in Afghanistan, the U.S. helped train the Colombian forces over the years so that they could be capable of taking on the fight on their own.

Meanwhile, said O'Hanlon, the U.S. may be able to learn some of the Colombian's well-honed jungle warfare skills.

Despite battling the FARC and Taliban for many years, officials say they continue to learn new tactics that can be shared.

Still, there are differences between the two experiences ? a key one being that the Colombians are fighting in their own country, and are not the unwelcome foreign forces that the U.S. military can sometimes be in Afghanistan. The Colombian forces are largely viewed as legitimate in the country.

"It's just a useful reminder of how it can take time and how sometimes the solutions you get are imperfect," O'Hanlon said. "We've got to be patient and sometimes lower standards a little bit for success."

Panetta's visit to Colombia came on the heels of the U.S. Secret Service sex scandal that erupted earlier this month during President Barack Obama's visit to Cartagena.
