Can Aromatherapy Massage Help Improve Certain Health Conditions?

Some studies suggest the aromatic compounds, and essential oils used in aromatherapy massage, may be therapeutic in improving a person?s health.

Aromatherapy massage is an alternative form of medicine, which has been used in one form or another for centuries. In fact, this is the reason many people prefer to indulge and treat themselves to an aromatherapy message.

To introduce a person to an aromatherapy message, let?s begin with its origins. The origins of aromatherapy can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times, when aromatic spices and herbs, were used in Egyptian medicinal practices, as well as, for cosmetic and embalming purposes.

In the early 1900?s, England and France turned to the ancient practices of aromatherapy, by discovering newer methods of practicing this technique. Some French doctors, today, even prescribe some form of aromatherapy for their patients. Later on, techniques using aromatherapy were modified, and developed into the more popular technique of aromatherapy massage.

Aromatherapy massage bases its treatment on the use of essential oils derived from plants, either using the leaves, flowers, bark, or roots, then complements the use of oils with a soothing massage.

What kind of essential oils are used?

? A variety of essential oils are used from this technique, and essential oils may produce a different effect when inhaled. One oil may be used, or even a combination of a few essential oils.
For example, for cleansing and energizing, rosemary may be used.

? As a calming effect, lavender and chamomile often is the oil of choice. For decongestants, pine and eucalyptus seem to work best as essential oils to help produce this result.

The theory behind aromatherapy massage is that when a person inhales some of the essential oils while receiving a massage, different areas of the body are affected, such as blood pressure, breathing, digestion, heart rate, anxiety and stress levels.

The actual massage used during aromatherapy consists of slow and gentle, rhythmic movements. This should produce a relaxation of the muscles and also stimulate the lymphatic system, while assisting the body to naturally release stress and toxins. It?s best to consult with your aroma therapist before your massage, to determine which essential oils would be suitable for your massage.

What physical, or emotional conditions can aromatherapy massage help to alleviate?

Here is a list of the most frequent conditions that seem to benefit from aromatherapy massage.

? Digestive disorders, which can include constipation, acid-reflux, heartburn, or gas.
? Headaches, such as, migraines.
? PMS (Premenstrual syndrome)
? Stress reliever
? Sleep disorders, for example, insomnia.
? Hormonal imbalances
? Menopause

Aromatherapy massage is a form of preventive therapy as well, as a complementary to keeping people healthy. When a person is calm and relaxed, stress is alleviated, therefore, producing beneficial results for a person?s blood pressure, heart rate, nervous and circulatory systems.

A word of caution, if you have any medical or skin condition that you are currently being treated for, consult your physician before receiving an aromatherapy massage to be sure there would be no complications with the essential oils or massage.

An aromatherapy massage may be just the answer to achieve a soothing and revitalized frame of mind, or help to alleviate any bothersome physical ailment.
