Now, in a sign of how much life there has changed, she's back to being a world traveler, catching an 85-minute flight to neighboring Thailand on Tuesday night.
With the installation of an elected government last year, and her party's own entrance into parliament this year, she can claim at least partial success for her long fight and feel a freedom to explore the world.
Suu Kyi is to spend several days in Thailand, meeting with poor migrant workers and war refugees from her homeland, as well as international movers and shakers at the the World Economic Forum on East Asia.
She'll return to Myanmar briefly and head to Europe in mid-June, with stops including Geneva and Oslo ? to formally accept the Nobel Peace Prize she won 21 years ago.

The last time the 66-year-old Nobel laureate flew abroad was a year before the Berlin Wall came down, in April 1988, when she traveled from London to Myanmar to nurse her dying mother.
Until then she had led an international lifestyle, growing up partly in India, where her mother was ambassador. She later attended Oxford, worked for the United Nations in New York and Bhutan and then married British academic Michael Aris and raised their two sons in England.
Suu Kyi returned to Myanmar just as an uprising erupted against the military regime. As daughter of Gen. Aung San, the country's independence hero, she was thrust into the forefront of demonstrations until the military brutally crushed the protests and locked her under house arrest in 1989.
Over the next two decades she became the world's most famous political prisoner. During intermittent periods of freedom, she declined opportunities to go abroad for fear she would not be allowed to re-enter Myanmar.
Suu Kyi's commitment to the cause came at high personal cost. In 1999, she stayed in Myanmar even as her husband was dying of cancer in England. They last saw each other in 1995, after which the junta denied Aris a visa.
After her release from house arrest in November 2010, Suu Kyi had an emotional reunion with her younger son, Kim Aris, when the junta gave him a visa after a decade-long separation.
The English leg of Suu Kyi's trip is bound to include some family time. She will celebrate her 67th birthday on June 19 while in England, where Kim lives.
Suu Kyi's aides have offered few details about her trip aside from the destinations, saying only that she will pack medicine for motion sickness.
"She gets airsick and seasick very easily. She will have to take her pills to prevent airsickness," said Win Htein, a senior official from her National League for Democracy party. He said she was typically stoic ahead of her travels: "She doesn't look too excited about it."
Thailand was not part of the original itinerary but Suu Kyi decided last week to attend the economic forum. She has a Friday speaking slot that is bound to be the event's main attraction.
Suu Kyi's appearance at the conference had threatened to upstage that of Myanmar President Thein Sein, but he canceled over the weekend citing "urgent matters" at home, said Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi. He rescheduled his first official visit to Thailand for next week.
Thein Sein took power last year from the military junta following elections that were deemed unfair by international observers. Since then he has surprised much of the world by engineering sweeping reforms, though military leaders still have great control over the country.
Since Suu Kyi's release, many international dignitaries have visited her in Myanmar, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in December and British Prime Minister David Cameron in April. Cameron suggested she visit her "beloved Oxford" in June.
Suu Kyi replied at the time: "Two years ago I would have said 'Thank you for the invitation, but sorry.' But now I am able to say 'Perhaps,' and that's great progress."

Each year before Memorial Day, the soldiers of the Old Guard place thousands of flags on gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery. The annual "flags in" ceremony honors each headstone with an American flag, the same national symbol that covers a service member's casket at his or her funeral.
All who serve and die are honored in the same manner at Arlington, with eligibility based on military service, not the manner of death. No distinction is made about which gravesite gets a flag and which does not -- whether they died in combat, during a military training accident, from illness, in a terrorist attack, or by suicide -- each grave receives an American flag -- standing proud and true honoring the life and service of a fallen hero.
This weekend, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) held its 18th annual National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp for all who are grieving the death of a member of the Armed Forces, regardless of the circumstances or the geography of the death. This is the true spirit of Memorial Day, to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of all who have died while serving, all who stepped forward during a time of conflict to go where their nation needed them, to selflessly serve in the cause of freedom.
When you look seriously at the issue of memorializing our fallen military members, you find many inconsistencies that inflict emotional pain on survivors. Take for example, the family of Marine Lance Corporal Darrell Schumann, who died in Iraq in 2005 while riding in a helicopter that crashed in a sandstorm. Lance Corporal Schumann's father, himself a veteran, has spent years questioning why a citizen board in Virginia refuses to include his son's name on a memorial wall on the state capitol grounds that honors the military dead. The board says that because Lance Corporal Schumann was not killed by a hostile act, his name can't be placed on the well, even though he died while deployed in a war zone.
Lance Corporal Schumann was on duty for America the day he died, and he was in Iraq because of the military mission. Yet his family is denied the simple honor of having his name etched on a wall alongside thousands of others, including victims of similar military aviation accidents from previous wars. In January, the board indicated it would consider adopting a more inclusive standard, but still had no plan to add non-hostile deaths in the Global War on Terror to the memorial. The Schumann family and others like them, continue to wait.
Then there's Gary Farwell, who tried to get a gold star license plate from the state of Idaho to recognize his son's sacrifice for his country. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Gary Marc Farwell died in 2010 in a military helicopter crash in Germany that killed two other soldiers. He had served four combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan flying Black Hawk helicopters with the U.S. military. Yet his application for a gold star license plate was rejected by the State of Idaho, because his son had not died in combat.
Are the deaths of military service members like Schumann and Farwell - who swore an oath to protect and defend this country, who were doing their duty at the time of their deaths - any less important or honorable? Do their families grieve any less than the families of those who die in combat? Is it right for society to honor people only for how their lives are taken - and not for how they are lived?
The Schumanns and the Farwell are not alone. While I was heartened to see the White House expand its policy in 2011 to send presidential condolence letters to the families of those who die by suicide while stationed in combat zones, the policy continues to exclude the two-thirds of families whose military loved ones die by suicide in other locations.
Army Lt. General Bill Troy was asked in 2010 about this as he honored a soldier who had died by suicide. He replied that when the military gives suicide victims a different kind of memorial service, "I think that you're adding to the stigmatization of a soldier who has a behavioral health problem. You don't mean to, but what you're doing is, you're making it look like it's his fault."
"We should be memorializing his service to the nation, his service in combat," General Troy said. "He's a volunteer, a member of a free nation who came and joined our ranks to defend this country and that's what we should be memorializing, not passing judgment on the manner of his death."
Who gets memorialized becomes even more complicated when you look at the numbers. From 2001 to 2011, about 16,700 American service members died worldwide. Though there were two wars under way, less than 30 percent of those military deaths, nearly 5,000 in total, were classified as due to hostile action or terrorist attack by the Department of Defense. That left more than 11,700 families grieving the deaths of their fallen service members in training accidents, suicides, homicides or illness, both in war zones and outside of them.
When tallying the number of Americans who have died at war, it's common for political leaders and others to combine hostile and non-hostile deaths that occur in combat zones. Nearly 4,500 Americans died in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn in Iraq, and nearly 2,000 have died in Afghanistan. Nearly a thousand of the deaths in Iraq (934) and 420 of the deaths in Afghanistan have been classified as due to non-hostile causes by the Department of Defense. These are deaths that result from accidents, sudden illness, suicide, or homicide.
Today, all deaths in combat zones are memorialized with presidential condolence letters. But many of these fallen troops, like Schumann and Farwell, are denied memorialization by their communities or states because they were not "killed in action."
Both the Schumanns and Farwells have their loved ones memorialized at Arlington National Cemetery with grave markers and received presidential condolence letters. Yet these families are denied recognition by their communities and states because of how their loved ones died.
Many surviving families of fallen service members are hurt and confused when a government, community, organization or individual places greater value on one type of military death over another. These families wonder why service members who voluntarily joined the military to defend their country and put their lives on the line for it, are treated differently in death.
To define the value of a life by only the moment of its death -- robs the family and our nation -- of what each service member gave this country -- a life lived in service to country.
Thankfully, we are beginning to see some changes. Rural Purcellvilla, Va. held a candlelight vigil, attended by thousands of people, to honor Marine Captain Michael Quin as he journeyed to his final resting place. Captain Quin died in a helicopter training crash in Arizona earlier this year while preparing for deployment.
To see a community turn out to support the family of an American hero, who died not in Iraq or Afghanistan, but on duty in a training accident in the United States, shows that some communities are beginning to embrace a broader definition of memorializing their fallen.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) ? A cluster of thunderstorms that stalled off the southeastern U.S. coast on Saturday is expected to make for a sloppy, rainy Memorial Day on beaches and in tourist towns from Florida to South Carolina.
Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Beryl was technically still considered a "subtropical storm," but the system is expected to bring winds and rain to the area regardless of its official classification.
Tropical storm conditions ? meaning maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph) ? could reach the coast as early as Saturday night. Three to six inches of rain are forecast for the area. Some coastal flooding is forecast, as the rain could cause high tides.
As of 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, Beryl was still centered about 220 miles (354 kilometers) east-southeast of Charleston, S.C. It had become stronger, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (80 kph). It was moving southwest at 6 mph, with its center expected to be near the coast by late Sunday.
Dangerous surf conditions are possible from northeast Florida to North Carolina over the holiday weekend, forecasters said.
The southeastern coast is popular with tourists who visit the beaches and wilderness areas.
"A three-day thunderstorm is what it's probably going to be," said Jay Wiggins, emergency management director for Glynn County, which is about 60 miles south of Savannah and includes Brunswick and St. Simons Island. "Unfortunately, it's going to ruin a lot of Memorial Day plans."
Wiggins said he expects some flooded roadways and scattered power outages, perhaps some minor flooding in waterfront homes, but otherwise little damage. However, he urged beachgoers to beware of dangerous rip currents.
On Tybee Island, home to Georgia's largest public beach east of Savannah, employees at Amy Gaster's home and condo rental business were making sure arriving guests were aware of the approaching storm. Gaster said her 180 rentals were sold out and nobody was canceling plans or asking to check out early.
"Mostly I think people are just curious," said Gaster, adding that guests were being urged to bring in patio furniture if the winds kick up and prepare to hunker down for movies and home cooking Monday. "We're just saying. 'Take advantage of today as your beach day and get it while you can.'"
On Cumberland Island, a federally protected wilderness area beloved by hikers and campers, superintendent Fred Boyles said he planned to wait until Sunday to decide if campers need to evacuate before the storm arrives. Boyles said he had about 100 campers planning to stay overnight Sunday, and the only way to leave Cumberland Island is by ferry.
While Georgia hasn't taken a direct hit from a major hurricane in 114 years, the last time a tropical storm made landfall here was in August 1988. Tropical Storm Chris hit near Savannah but did little damage as it pushed northward into South Carolina.
In South Carolina, Beaufort County Emergency Management deputy director David Zeoli (zee-oli) said that at midday Saturday word went out to first-responders along the coast near the Georgia line to pay attention to the storm's progress. Officials haven't been ordered to work on an otherwise lovely day for the beach, but have been told to stay near a phone, Zeoli said.

FACT CHECK: Obama off on thrifty spending claim

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House is aggressively pushing the idea that, contrary to widespread belief, President Barack Obama is tightfisted with taxpayer dollars. To back it up, the administration cites a media report that claims federal spending is rising at the slowest pace since the Eisenhower years.
"Federal spending since I took office has risen at the slowest pace of any president in almost 60 years," Obama said at a campaign rally Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.
The problem with that rosy claim is that the Wall Street bailout is part of the calculation. The bailout ballooned the 2009 budget just before Obama took office, making Obama's 2010 results look smaller in comparison. And as almost $150 billion of the bailout was paid back during Obama's watch, the analysis counted them as government spending cuts.
It also assumes Obama had less of a role setting the budget for 2009 than he really did.
Obama rests his claim on an analysis by MarketWatch, a financial information and news service owned by Dow Jones & Co. The analysis simply looks at the year-to-year topline spending number for the government but doesn't account for distortions baked into the figures by the Wall Street bailout and government takeover of the mortgage lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The MarketWatch study finds spending growth of only 1.4 percent over 2010-2013, or annual increases averaging 0.4 percent over that period. Those are stunningly low figures considering that Obama rammed through Congress an $831 billion stimulus measure in early 2009 and presided over significant increases in annual spending by domestic agencies at the same time the cost of benefit programs like Social Security, Medicare and the Medicaid were ticking steadily higher.
A fairer calculation would give Obama much of the responsibility for an almost 10 percent budget boost in 2009, then a 13 percent increase over 2010-2013, or average annual growth of spending of just more than 3 percent over that period.
So, how does the administration arrive at its claim?
First, there's the Troubled Assets Relief Program, the official name for the Wall Street bailout. First, companies got a net $151 billion from TARP in 2009, making 2010 spending look smaller. Then, because banks and Wall Street firms repaid a net $110 billion in TARP funds in 2010, Obama is claiming credit for cutting spending by that much.
The combination of TARP lending in one year and much of that money being paid back in the next makes Obama's spending record for 2010 look $261 billion thriftier than it really was. Only by that measure does Obama "cut" spending by 1.8 percent in 2010 as the analysis claims.
The federal takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac also makes Obama's record on spending look better than it was. The government spent $96 billion on the Fannie-Freddie takeovers in 2009 but only $40 billion on them in 2010. By the administration's reckoning, the $56 billion difference was a spending cut by Obama.
Taken together, TARP and the takeover of Fannie and Freddie combine to give Obama an undeserved $317 billion swing in the 2010 figures and the resulting 1.8 percent cut from 2009. A fairer reading is an almost 8 percent increase.
Those two bailouts account for $72 billion more in cuts in 2011. Obama supported the bailouts.
There's also the question of how to treat the 2009 fiscal year, which actually began Oct. 1, 2008, almost four months before Obama took office. Typically, the remaining eight months get counted as part of the prior president's spending since the incoming president usually doesn't change it much until the following October. The MarketWatch analysis assigned 2009 to former President George W. Bush, though it gave Obama responsibility that year for a $140 million chunk of the 2009 stimulus bill.
But Obama's role in 2009 spending was much bigger than that. For starters, he signed nine spending bills funding every Cabinet agency except Defense, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security. While the numbers don't jibe exactly, Obama bears the chief responsibility for an 11 percent, $59 billion increase in non-defense spending in 2009. Then there's a 9 percent, $109 billion increase in combined defense and non-defense appropriated outlays in 2010, a year for which Obama is wholly responsible.
As other critics have noted, including former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the MarketWatch analysis also incorporates CBO's annual baseline as its estimate for fiscal years 2012 and 2013. That gives Obama credit for three events unlikely to occur:
?$65 billion in 2013 from automatic, across-the-board spending cuts slated to take effect next January.
?Cuts in Medicare payments to physicians.
?The expiration of refundable tax cuts that are "scored" as spending in federal ledgers.
Lawmakers are unlikely to allow the automatic cuts to take full effect, but it's at best a guessing game as to what will really happen in 2013. A better measure is Obama's request for 2013.
"You can only make him look good by ignoring the early years and adopting the hope and not the reality of the years in his budget," said Holtz-Eakin, a GOP economist and president of the American Action Forum, a free market think tank.
So how does Obama measure up?
If one assumes that TARP and the takeover of Fannie and Freddie by the government as one-time budgetary anomalies and remove them from calculations ? an approach taken by Holtz-Eakin ? you get the following picture:
?A 9.7 percent increase in 2009, much of which is attributable to Obama.
?A 7.8 percent increase in 2010, followed by slower spending growth over 2011-13. Much of the slower growth reflects the influence of Republicans retaking control of the House and their budget and debt deal last summer with Obama. All told, government spending now appears to be growing at an annual rate of roughly 3 percent over the 2010-2013 period, rather than the 0.4 percent claimed by Obama and the MarketWatch analysis.

Wildlife researcher photographs rare Sumatran rabbit

Using camera traps, wildlife researchers including doctoral candidate Jennifer McCarthy and environmental conservation professor Todd Fuller of the University of Massachusetts Amherst recently captured photographs of one of the rarest animals on earth, the Sumatran striped rabbit. They say it may now be found only in two remote national parks on the Indonesian island.
Their pictures and other observations are reported in the current issue of Oryx, The International Journal of Conservation. The rare rabbit was first photographed in Kerinci Seblat National Park in 1998 and has rarely been seen since.
"Whether the rabbit does occur undetected in other parks is not certain, but the importance of protecting these two known strongholds of the species is critical," say McCarthy and colleagues. "As the human population of Sumatra rises, both parks are increasingly threatened by encroachment of villages and development of roads and infrastructure. It is important to focus conservation efforts in these areas to prevent a loss of what could be the final two populations of Sumatran striped rabbits."
Sumatra's Bukit Barisan Mountains, where the rabbits were captured on film, form the rugged backbone of the sixth largest island in the world. Since 2008, McCarthy and Fuller have been conducting an ecological study of the clouded leopard, Asiatic golden cat, marbled cat and leopard cats in Indonesia's Bukit Barisan Seletan National Park.
McCarthy says, "As part of my dissertation research on the four felids, or cats, we also happened to get pictures of this very rare rabbit. There had been a few camera-trap photos seen of it before, but very, very rarely. We wanted to take these observations a step further, so we worked with colleagues from the University of Delaware and the Wildlife Conservation Society's Indonesia Program to contact every researcher we knew throughout Sumatra who was doing camera-trap research, probably 20 or 30 people. This gave us good coverage of the island."
"We asked them about sightings of the Sumatran striped rabbit and report the results in our paper." Overall, the conservation biologist adds, "The biggest news is that we only received recent sighting information from these two parks. For the first time, we can pinpoint that these two areas may be the only ones remaining where this species occurs. We can't say they don't occur elsewhere, but we are saying it's important to preserve those areas in order to save the species."
Habitats critical to many forms of wildlife in the parks face constant pressure from nearby coffee and palm oil plantations and from those who want logging roads built, she adds. Roads would not only destroy habitat but would allow humans, including poachers, access into relatively wild and remote places. In Sumatra between 2000 and 2009, more than 7.6 million acres (3.1 million hectares) of forest were lost to such encroachment, McCarthy says.
Much of her work was done at fairly high altitudes, in dense rainforest and rugged terrain, along volcanic ridges up to 3,900 feet (1,200 meters) high, where human encroachment is low, McCarthy says. The area has a relatively high density of wildlife, including tigers, so the investigators never travel alone and always have a park ranger with them. After walking miles to visit their cameras and snares, they roll out their sleeping bags in local villages as guests of families with no electricity, running water or modern plumbing.
McCarthy says, "It's such a beautiful place. I hope we are able to increase conservation initiatives. At this point we really need to increase the involvement of local people in order to save these areas. There is some appreciation of the value of wildlife, especially for the tiger. But the root of the problem, the loss of habitat, hasn't really slowed down. We feel our presence and the fact that our research supports a park ranger has helped to make a difference."

Robert Pattinson's 'Cosmopolis': The Cannes Reviews Are In!
Critics are split on whether the 'Twilight' actor was the right casting choice.

After supporting his girlfriend Kristen Stewart as she debuted "On the Road," Robert Pattinson hit the Cannes Film Festival on Friday (May 25) to premiere his film "Cosmopolis." Directed by David Cronenberg, the film follows Eric Packer (Pattinson) in the not-too-distant future as he's chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut. His entire world is falling apart — his marriage is failing, his financial status is slipping and even his very life is being threatened.
As reviews of the film pour in, it's apparent that critics agree the film has its odd moments, but they're split on whether Pattinson is the perfect choice for the lead role. Here's what the critics had to say about "Cosmopolis."
The Story
" 'Cosmopolis,' an adaptation of Don DeLillo's typically provocative novel of the same name, is the first feature film since 1999's 'eXistenZ' that filmmaker David Cronenberg has directed and scripted. This in part explains why 'Cosmopolis' is such a triumph: it's both an exceptional adaptation and a remarkable work unto itself.
Cronenberg makes slight but salient changes to DeLillo's source narrative. These changes, which are best described by one character as 'slight variation[s],' prove that Cronenberg's given serious consideration to what should and shouldn't be represented in his adaptation of the author's ruminative, conversation-driven narrative. For example, in Cronenberg's film, Eric Packer (a surprisingly adequate Robert Pattinson), an ambivalent and self-destructive power broker, does not get to have sex with his wife like he's wanted to do throughout DeLillo's book. Other changes, like the fact that Packer is investing and studying the steady rise in the Chinese yuan in the film and not the Japanese yen, as in the book, are equally striking. These differences noticeably enrich DeLillo's original story, making Cronenberg's 'Cosmopolis' that much more rewarding in its own dizzying way." — Simon Abrams, Indiewire

"On the page and on film, Eric is a controlled and controlling figure, a man impervious to society's norms who one must feel has a mind operating well beyond the capacities of mere mortals. He's utterly humorless and without detectable compassion or accessible humanity, which makes him less than companionable as a character. Pattinson doesn't help matters by revealing nothing behind the eyes and delivering nearly all his lines with the same rhythm and intonations, plus repetitive head nods in the bargain. The Final Word
"[R]ather than a thriller, 'Cosmopolis' plays more like a wispy film of ideas, with conversations in the limo about society, wealth and humanity dominating most of the screen time. Almost all of these feel detached and meticulously unfocused. Characters toss around ideas or questions, which their conversation partner then promptly ignores or responds to with a non-sequitur. It's often reminiscent of work by playwright/screenwriter Harold Pinter, but never quite as fun, nor nearly as humorous as it should be. ... The winner of 'American Idol' is ...

?American Idol? voters sure love guys with guitars.?Phillip Phillips continued the dominance of the guys on the show, winning the season 11 title and the million-dollar recording contract that goes with it. The normally laid-back singer was overwhelmed when host Ryan Seacrest announced the results, breaking down midway through his performance of ?Home? and leaving the stage to hug his parents.
It was a rare misstep for the former pawn shop worker from Georgia, who was never announced as one of the lowest vote-getters at any point. Though his voice lacked the power and range of some of the other finalists and he battled health problems throughout the season, he was the most contemporary of the contenders and should have a big seller with that first single.
Jessica Sanchez finished second, continuing an ?Idol? trend. No woman has won the show since Jordin Sparks in season six, and if the folks behind the show want to change that next year, they should probably avoid selecting the same types of singers to compete each season.
The two-hour, seven-minute finale took its time getting to that final envelope, with the decision made by a record 132 million votes. The show used some of those 127 minutes to make fun of the judges (though it largely spared the contestants, except for one early audition montage), and there were the usual live performances featuring selected contestants sharing the stage with music legends.

Phillip sang with John Fogerty, breaking out the Creedence Clearwater Revival hits ?Have You Ever Seen the Rain?? and ?Bad Moon Rising.? If the post-"Idol" career doesn?t go as expected for the new champ, he?s got a future in a CCR or Dave Matthews cover band for sure.
Jessica, meanwhile, got original "Dreamgirl" Jennifer Holliday for ?I Am Telling You I?m Not Going.? It was one of the best performances of the season, though sadly for Jessica it came after the votes were already counted.
In addition, Joshua Ledet sang with ?the biggest inspiration of my life,? season three champion Fantasia Barrino, a duet that likely shattered glass throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Skylar Laine got Reba McEntire as her partner, and Hollie Cavanagh sang with Jordin Sparks. ?
For the group numbers, Chaka Khan came onstage with the women, while the legendary Neil Diamond joined the men and thrilled Red Sox fans everywhere by performing ?Sweet Caroline.?
And that?s not all! Viewers saw the first ?Idol? proposal in history, as Diana DeGarmo (season three finalist) said yes to Ace Young (season five seventh-place finisher). There was also a Bee Gees tribute from the ?Idol? guys, and Rihanna performed without a wardrobe malfunction or lyrics that caused the Fox censors to faint with worry. Jane Lynch was also spotted rocking out in the stands to the Chaka Khan set. Maybe there?s a ?Glee? guest appearance in her future.
Other notable moments in the finale:
- Ford did wind up giving Phillip a car despite his bailing on most of the promotional videos. Also getting new wheels were Jessica, Phillip?s brother-in-law and Jessica?s family friend/music mentor. However, Ford did not pull an Oprah and give everyone in the audience a car.
- The ?Idol? finalists showed that you can sing the phone book, as Randy Jackson always says, but it?s not exactly something that cries out for an iTunes download.
- ?Idol? showed that it can indeed survive without J.Lo as a judge, as she was absent for a good portion of the broadcast to get ready for her two-song set.
- Steven Tyler also took the stage along with Aerosmith for two tunes. Apparently, Randy, who was the only judge not to perform, doesn't have much pull with his former bandmates. Those Journey days must seem like they happened a very long time ago. Oh, wait. They did.

Spain's banks in focus ahead of Bankia rescue plan
MADRID (Reuters) - Spain may say on Wednesday how it will plug a hole of at least 8 billion euros ($10.21 billion) at Bankia, part of an effort to clean up a banking sector laden with bad debts and stop the country sinking further into the euro zone debt crisis.
Economists say Spain has little hope of emerging from recession unless there is a wide-ranging bank recapitalization and many predict it will need an international aid package similar to the ones handed out to Greece and Ireland.
Spain says it does not need outside money and government sources told Reuters on Tuesday it would outline a rescue for the country's fourth largest lender, formed from the merger of seven banks during an earlier unsuccessful restructuring.
The government has just picked Goldman Sachs to value Bankia and consultancies Oliver Wyman and Roland Berger were hired to audit other banks' loan books, damaged by a property crash that helped push bad loans to their highest in 18 years.
Economy Minister de Guindos is expected to give details on the government's plans for Bankia in parliament at 1600 GMT but economists said the focus was on the banking sector as a whole.
"The market has moved beyond Bankia. How much Bankia will get in aid is not going to make a big difference," said Martin van Vliet, senior economist at ING.
"The question is now about the long-term solvency of parts of Spain's banking system, especially what is going to happen with mortgage loan default. This concern is not being addressed."
A leading banking industry group, the Institute of International Finance (IIF), has said Spain's banks could need another 76 billion euros to cover losses as bad debts might rise as high as 260 billion euros.
Bankia needs to find about 7.5 billion euros by the year-end to meet government demands to cushion itself against real estate losses. It also needs to raise about 1.3 billion euros by June to meet strict European Banking Authority capital rules.
Spain last week converted 4.5 billion euros of state loans to parent company BFA (Banco Financiero y de Ahorros) into equity, giving it a majority stake in Bankia and partly nationalizing the lender.
One source said de Guindos was likely to announce the final taxpayer's bill of Bankia's rescue. He has estimated the state will put less than 15 billion euros into the latest of the four Spanish bank rescues in recent years.
A second source said talks on the size and form of the bailout - through loans, equity or cash injection - were being held between the economy ministry, the Bank of Spain, Bankia and Goldman Sachs.
DOWNSIZING
Financial markets are closely watching the developments in the banking sector to see whether Spain will become the next casualty in the debt crisis that started in Greece. Four of Greece's largest banks got an 18 billion euro recapitalization on Tuesday.
Spanish bond yields were trading at 6.16 percent on Wednesday, not far off 7 percent, the level that is seen as unsustainable for a country's finances. Bankia's shares were little changed at 1.73 euros, against a blue-chip Spanish index 2 percent lower.
The appointment of outside auditors, as well as U.S. bank Goldman Sachs on Bankia, has been seen as an effort to reassure investors and European Union leaders, who will meet at a summit on Wednesday, that Spain has the situation under control.
Banking sources questioned whether these external consultants could wring more information from lenders than has already been given to institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the central bank.
One banker said the appointment of external auditors indicated a lack of trust in the central bank.
"The Bank of Spain has a great team, they could always hire some accountants. I don't understand why the government agreed to outside auditors. It seems as if people don't trust the central bank," said one investment banker in Madrid.
There have also been questions about the size of the fees the companies would earn while the government is cutting spending to improve its finances.
However, advisers who have worked on other government bank restructurings said fees for Goldman Sachs would likely be lower than for other deals, with most firms agreeing to do such work for the prestige and in the hope that it brings new business.
Several financial and government sources told Reuters last week that the strategy of the Spanish authorities would be to clean up, downsize and sell Bankia within three years.
That plan could however derail if the several capital gaps identified in the accounts by the lender's auditor Deloitte were too large, the sources said.

Robotic fish shoal sniffs out pollution in harbours
There is something unnatural lurking in the waters of the port of Gijon, Spain, and researchers are tracking its every move. It is not some bizarre new form of marine life, but an autonomous robotic fish designed to sense marine pollution, taking to the open waves for the first time.
"With these fish we can find exactly what is causing the pollution and put a stop to it right away," explains Luke Speller, a scientist at the British technology firm BMT and the leader of SHOAL, a European project involving universities, businesses and the port of Gijon, which have joined forces to create the fish.
Currently the port relies on divers to monitor water quality, which is a lengthy process costing ?100,000 per year. The divers take water samples from hundreds of points in the port, then send them off for analysis, with the results taking weeks to return. By contrast, the SHOAL robots would continuously monitor the water, letting the port respond immediately to the causes of pollution, such as a leaking boat or industrial spillage, and work to mitigate its effects
.
The SHOAL fish are one and a half metres long, comparable to the size and shape of a tuna, but their neon-yellow plastic shell means they are unlikely to be mistaken for the real thing. A range of onboard chemical sensors detect lead, copper and other pollutants, along with measuring water salinity. They are driven by a dual-hinged tail capable of making tight turns that would be impossible with a propeller-driven robot.
They are also less noisy, reducing the impact on marine life. The robots are battery powered and capable of running for 8 hours between charges. At the moment the researchers have to recover them by boat, but their plan is that the fish will return to a charging station by themselves.
Working in a group, the fish can cover a 1 kilometre-square region of water, down to a depth of 30 metres. They communicate with each other and a nearby base-station using very low-frequency sound waves, which can penetrate the water more easily than radio waves. However, this means the fish have a low data transmission rate and can only send short, predefined messages. "It's a good solution, but it requires thinking carefully about what data to transmit and how to use that data," says Kristi Morgansen, a roboticist at the University of Washington, who was not involved in the research.
Navigation relies on a related system that communicates with four "pingers" at the corners of the port, which act much like GPS satellites for the fish. If one fish senses pollution in an area it can call the others to create a detailed map of high and low concentrations around it, helping port authorities to locate the exact source of the pollutant.
Versions of the fish have been working successfully in the lab for a few years now, but trialling them in a real-life port has proved more difficult. Rough weather has often prevented the researchers from venturing out on the waves, though Speller says the fish would be fine as they can simply dive below the water. But depth has also been a problem ? the waterproofing on one component is unable to withstand the pressure at 30m underwater, so it requires a last-minute replacement.
Thankfully the fish are fitted with a variety of safety features if something goes wrong, such as airbags that inflate to make the fish surface, and a GPS and cellphone chip in the fin so that a distressed fish can send its location details to Speller's phone via text message.
Having demonstrated that the fish can sense pollution and communicate underwater, the SHOAL group now plans to commercialise the design and sell it to other ports in Europe and the rest of the world. The prototypes currently cost around ?20,000 each, but mass production should bring that price down.
Speller plans to do more than just track pollution, however ? the fish's modular design makes it easy to swap the chemical sensors for other applications. "I like to see the fish as platform for other things that can be done in the sea, such as search and rescue, helping divers, and port security."
Morgansen says that underwater gliders have proved successful in monitoring open waters, but they cannot move within the tight spaces of a port or harbour. This means nimbler fish-inspired robots like SHOAL's may be the way forward. "I think the use of agile underwater robots for monitoring water systems will happen in most ports in the not-distant future."
