Anxiety awaits in sixth season of 'Mad Men' - KansasCity.com

? In the first episode of the first season of "Mad Men," Don Draper's next-in-line affair, Rachel Menken, hears his brutal philosophy: Love is nothing more than an ad man's myth, and everyone is born alone and dies alone.

Stack up five years of equivalent cynicism and unfulfilled dreams and the result is a drama with a core of shattered glass, dazzling but menacing.

As the series returns for what creator Matthew Weiner says is the penultimate season, he's asking viewers to embrace other, more comfortable concepts: belief and trust.

They must believe that he knows what they will find satisfying for Don, Peggy, Pete and the other souls of "Mad Men," and trust in his vision as the AMC drama returns 9 p.m. EDT Sunday with a two-hour episode.

That he's putting his characters on the knife's edge of dread may not make that trust any easier - especially since Weiner believes we are living uneasily with a 21st-century version of their 1960s mindset.

"This season is very much capturing what's going on right now, in a strange way," Weiner said. "I think we have been thrown into a state of individual anxiety, based on being disconnected from events outside our control," including economic disarray.

The writer-director paraphrases a line from Sunday's episode that he deems key to the sixth season: People will do anything to alleviate anxiety.

If that's intriguing but maddeningly cryptic, that's how Weiner wants "Mad Men" to be approached pre-debut. No spoilers, not even a hint of what happens, when it happens and whether Don finally is taking the institution of marriage to heart.

But if Weiner won't talk about what the season is, he's at least willing to say what it's not.

"It's not about Lane's suicide. There is no eulogy for Lane. It's not all about Joan and the Jaguar guy," he said.

The references are to two of last season's more startling twists: the hanging death of ad agency partner Lane after he's fired for theft, and Joan's prostituting herself, under pressure, to win the luxury car account for the agency.

There are other stories to be told, Weiner said, even if viewers tend to cling to the past and would prefer the show pick up with the calendar flipped just a day or two ahead. That would become boring "really fast," Weiner said.

"They (viewers) don't know it, but that would get burned out. ... They have to trust me," he said, even if it takes a couple of episodes to unfold.

How will the latest chapter of "Mad Men" be received? Last season, its winning streak of four consecutive best-drama Emmy Awards was broken when it lost to "Homeland" and it failed to capture any other Emmy trophies.

Jon Hamm, the center-ring attraction as Don, the sharp-dressed man with the tortured psyche, has no qualms about following Weiner's lead once more.

When he was up for the role, Hamm said, "Matt, and really no one else, fought for me. ... For whatever reason, Matt's trust in me worked out. And that's why I have trust in him."

He credits Weiner's probing, self-analytic nature with producing the richly complex world of "Mad Men" and its parade of human and cultural foibles.

"Matt is a wickedly smart, very curious and deeply flawed person, and he likes exploring those flaws and pulling them apart and examining them," Hamm said. "All writers are wonderful observers, (and) Matt sees everything at a micro level and macro level."

Like a master magician, Weiner clearly relishes toying with his audience and his characters. When he talks about Draper and others repeating old mistakes, he chortles.

When he recommends facing down one's lifetime of errors - "Every person who goes through that process with me gets a horrible feeling in the pit of their stomach" - he cackles.

The thought of those who complain about how he's switched up the "Mad Men" world elicits a Weiner giggle.

Reflect back on the show's pilot, and you'll see his most beguiling trickery at work. We are introduced to Don, looking the picture of the carefree bachelor, as he makes a late-night visit to lover Midge and casually suggests marriage. Poor guy; she just brushes it aside.

It's not until the episode's last moments that we learn the truth. As the exotic jazz strains of "Caravan" play in the background, Don returns home to his wife and sleeping children, and the family is framed in a mockery of a Norman Rockwell moment.

While "Mad Men" has flipped through the mind-bending '60s, Don has remained steadfastly true to the music, liquor and tie-and-shirt dress code of his generation while his colleagues let it all hang out with Beatles albums, pot and turtlenecks.

But don't mistake Draper for a lead-footed dinosaur on the verge of extinction, Weiner said.

"The world has finally caught up with Don. The world is in a state of identity crisis and he is the ultimate survivor," he said. "He's comfortable because he's used to disaster."

Hamm, close to wrapping up work on this season's 13 episodes, has found himself tested over the years by his character's dark side.

"There's no vicarious thrill for me as an actor to doing any of this sort of bad behavior. I don't get off on it. ... There's a psychic toll it takes," he said. "I'm not comparing myself to a bricklayer or construction worker or miner. But it does take a psychic toll."

Those in the "Mad Men" audience cheering for Don to fall off the marriage wagon, or looking to him for guidance, give Hamm pause.

"The central conundrum is why people think this is a good person to model their lives after," he said, citing one area of exception: "Don, I feel, strives for excellence and doesn't settle for mediocrity, and demands that of people who work for him."

"I think that's beginning to be a lost art in our current culture of '140 characters and that's good enough.' The fact there are people who still strive for excellence ... is inspiring. That is the one good thing about Don; not that he looks good in a suit, not that he can drink, not that he (expletive) a lot of women."

With the journey nearing conclusion for Draper and his fellow travelers, Weiner is faced with the task of wrapping up the ambitious drama that put him in the front ranks of TV producers. There are 13 episodes planned for its last season, he said.

"I have an idea for what it feels like for the show to end, and I think I know how it ends, and I've known for a couple of years," Weiner said - cryptically, of course.

Could Don, at last, find happiness? Hamm tackles that question.

"Well, that's the hope. And at some point it will be the journey of the series, finding that happiness, or a balance."

That's the audience's challenge as well. And Mr. Weiner's call.

Italy pardons U.S. pilot convicted in CIA rendition case

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's president on Friday pardoned a U.S. Air Force officer convicted of kidnapping an Egyptian Muslim cleric who was taken away for interrogation on a CIA "rendition" flight.

Such covert flights were among the tactics used to wage the "War on Terror" under the administration of former U.S. President George W. Bush, after the 9/11 attacks. They have been condemned by human rights groups as a violation of international agreements.

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano said he had pardoned Colonel Joseph L. Romano, who was the only person not a member of the CIA among 23 Americans sentenced for the kidnapping of Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr in Milan in 2003.

Romano's lawyer had requested the pardon. The clemency was granted because the United States and Italy are close allies that "share the common goals of promoting democracy and security" around the world, a statement from the president said.

The Egyptian cleric, also known as Abu Omar, was secretly flown to Egypt for interrogation, where he says he was tortured for seven months. He was a resident in Italy at the time of the abduction.

Italy was the first country to convict American nationals for their involvement in a rendition.

Romano and 21 others received seven-year jail terms for kidnapping, while the former CIA Milan station chief Robert Seldon Lady was sentenced to nine years in jail.

All were tried in absentia and the Italian government has so far shown little indication it will ask for them to be extradited to serve the terms. No reason was given for why Romano was awarded clemency while the 22 CIA members were not.

U.S. President Barack Obama has tried to distance himself from heavy-handed intelligence tactics employed by the Bush administration, and ordered the CIA to close its long-term prisons in 2009.

AP Sources: Gophers to hire FIU's Richard Pitino

(AP) ? Minnesota has picked Richard Pitino, the son of Louisville coach Rick Pitino, to take over for Tubby Smith.

A person with knowledge of the discussions says Pitino reached a verbal agreement with Minnesota on Wednesday. The person requested anonymity because the deal has not been officially announced.

In his lone season at Florida International, Pitino led the Panthers to an 18-14 record, the school's first winning season in 13 years. He will turn 31 in September, fitting the profile of the young, up-and-comer that Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague has preferred to hire in the past.

Smith was fired last week after six seasons at Minnesota. He was hired at Texas Tech on Monday.

New clues in the search to rediscover the mysterious Maya Blue formula

Apr. 2, 2013 ? The recipe and process for preparing Maya Blue, a highly-resistant pigment used for centuries in Mesoamerica, were lost. We know that the ingredients are a plant dye, indigo, and a type of clay known as palygorskite, but scientists do not know how they were 'cooked' and combined together. Now, a team of chemists from the University of Valencia and the Polythecnic University of Valencia (Spain) have come up with a new hypothesis about how it was prepared.

Palace walls, sculptures, codices and pieces of pottery produced by the ancient Maya incorporate the enigmatic Maya Blue. This pigment, which was also used by other Mesoamerican cultures, is characterised by its intense blue colour but, above all, by the fact that it is highly resistant to chemical and biological deterioration. Indeed, it was used centuries ago and when it is analysed now it appears virtually unchangeable.

There is no document that verifies how this paint was prepared and so it remains a mystery. Archaeologists and scientists have sought to uncover the mystery in recent years but it seems that researchers cannot come to an agreement.

The dominant theory proposes that there is a single type of Maya Blue that was also prepared in a unique way and that a specific type of bond binds the two components: one organic component, indigo -the dye used for denim that is obtained from the Indigofera suffruticosa plant in Mesoamerica- and another inorganic component, palygorskite, a type of clay characterised by its crystal structure full of internal channels.

But the work of a team from the University of Valencia (UV) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) seem to contradict this 'monoist' version. "We detected a second pigment in the samples, dehydroindigo, which must have formed through oxidation of the indigo when it underwent exposure to the heat that is required to prepare Maya Blue," stated Antonio Dom?nech, a UV researcher.

"Indigo is blue and dehydroindigo is yellow," the expert explained, "therefore the presence of both pigments in variable proportions would justify the more or less greenish tone of Maya Blue. It is possible that the Maya knew how to obtain the desired hue by varying the preparation temperature, for example heating the mixture for more or less time or adding more of less wood to the fire."

Another of the unsolved questions is how the dye molecules are distributed in palygorskite's crystal network. According to some scientists, the indigo adheres to the exterior of the clay structure with the 'brick' shape although it could also form a sort of 'cover' on the entrance to the channels.

However, other researchers believe that the indigo penetrates into the channels. This is the theory supported by the team from Valencia that has just published a study in the "Microporous and Mesoporous Materials" journal on the reactions that could be behind the formation of the blue pigment.

Two-stage process

The results reveal that two stages occur when both components are heated to temperatures between 120 and 180 ?C. In the first and fastest of the two stages water evaporates from the palygorskite and the indigo bonds to the clay, although a part oxidises and forms dehydroindigo.

In the second stage it would appear that the dye disperses through the channels in the clay. "The process is similar to what happens when we pour a drop of ink into a glass of water," Dom?nech said, drawing a comparison, although he acknowledges that "this is a hypothesis" at present.

The researcher's team, like other groups in other parts of the world, is also investigating the secret of the unknown chemical bonds that bind the organic to the inorganic component. These bonds are the reason behind Maya Blue's resistance.

In addition to palaces and buildings of the Maya nobility, this pigment is traditionally associated with ritual ceremonies conducted by priests, and may even have been used during human sacrifices. Containers holding traces of the pigment found at the bottom of some natural and human-made wells on the Yucat?n peninsula point to this ceremonial use.

Studies such as the one published by US anthropologists in 2008 on a bowl found in the Sacred Cenote of Chich?n Itz? led some media outlets to state that the mystery of Maya Blue had been solved. "The bowl contained Maya Blue mixed with copal incense so the simplified conclusion was that it was only prepared by warming incense," stated Dom?nech.

The researcher believes that the composition and function of Maya Blue could have varied down through the centuries: "Although quite a few samples would be required, it could be possible to establish the evolution in its properties and preparation throughout the Maya culture from approximately 150 B.C. to 800 A.D., in such a way that we could establish a chronology based on analysing the pigment. This provides a far more 'flexible' view of this culture, breaking with that traditional monolithic view of inflexible ritualism."

Small greenish balls in La Blanca

In support of this view, the team also recently found other pigments that are different from Maya Blue but follow the same pattern of a plant dye combined with clay. They found small greenish balls with this material in the ancient Maya city of La Blanca, modern day Guatemala, and it is assumed they were used to plaster and decorate the walls of palatial buildings.

"These materials were certainly not within the reach of the common people but they signal a more 'everyday' use of the pigments that would not have had to be restricted to ritual or ceremonial activities," Dom?nech pointed out and said by way of conclusion: "Maya Blue can be considered a polyfunctional material as it can combine different organic components with an inorganic carrier, which, in addition, can be distributed and react differently, thereby producing functions that are also different."

AstraZeneca suffers fresh drug patent setback in U.S.

LONDON (Reuters) - AstraZeneca has suffered a fresh patent setback with a U.S. court decision that a patent protecting its Pulmicort Repsules asthma treatment is invalid, clearing the way for a generic copy from Actavis.

The ruling comes as AstraZeneca is already facing a big fall in sales due to patent expiries on other medicines, prompting a $2.3 billion restructuring plan and further job losses announced by new CEO Pascal Soriot last month.

AstraZeneca said on Tuesday it strongly disagreed with the court's decision and was considering next steps, including lodging an appeal.

The District Court for the District of New Jersey ruled in favor of Actavis, which has developed a generic version that it now intends to launch immediately.

The verdict will not change AstraZeneca's revenue guidance for 2013, which is that the company anticipates a mid to high-single digit decline in sales.

But Britain's second-biggest drugmaker said additional generics entering the U.S. market would materially impact royalties received on sales of Teva's existing generic version of Pulmicort Repsules. Teva already has a generic on the market following an earlier deal with AstraZeneca.

Total branded and generic sales of Pulmicort Repsules were around $1.2 billion in the United States in the 12 months to January 2013, according to Actavis.
